What are in-office lab services?

Lab services include testing samples of bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, or urine. They allow your provider to get a comprehensive view of these fluids’ composition and provide valuable information about your health. Lab services show your provider more about your blood chemistry so they can identify the next steps in your treatment.

What in-office lab services are available?

Lab services offered in-house for adults and children at Grace Family Medicine Direct Primary Care of Wellington include:

• Blood cell counts
• Urinalysis
• Allergy testing
• Rapid strep test
• Immunology
• Cholesterol panel testing
• Drug monitoring
• Nutrient evaluation
• Metabolic panels

In-office labs involve obtaining a quick sample of your blood, urine, or other bodily substances. Usually, you get the results a minimum of 24 hours later.

When might I need in-house lab services?

Your provider may recommend labs for a number of reasons. You don’t have to be sick to need a lab test. You might get a test to:

• Monitor a chronic condition (e.g., diabetes, high cholesterol)
• Diagnose or rule out conditions
• Settle your mind if you’re concerned about a family history of disease or symptoms
• Provide you with normal screenings

If you or your child has a lab test, there’s no need for immediate concern. Knowing what’s going on in your bloodstream or other parts of your body is beneficial to you whether or not the tests identify any problems. 

What happens during in-office lab testing?

In-office lab services are simple, quick, and affordable. You come in right after your meeting with a provider or at another designated time to provide your samples.

If you are having blood tests, a phlebotomist draws blood from your arm; in the case of a urine test, you go into a private bathroom to provide your sample. Your provider lets you know any preparation necessary prior to the test – some blood tests require you not eat for 8-12 hours before. While getting a sample of your fluids seems messy or invasive, your results are completely private, and your identity concealed.
